Got into the office and there was this parcel on my desk with a card, Happy Birthday it says, at my age who would want to remember birthdays. Anyway started ripping off the wrapping, revealing what looks like a toy, someone is trying to be funny, just like the sex doll I got a few years back. It turned out to be a drone or rather a toy drone, or at least it appears to be at that moment. It was a Hubsan X4, all ready to fly, it even has a recording camera.
Still mumbling to myself on being subject of ridicule because of my age, a toy for a birthday present, I proceed to charge the battery which by the way was included, at least I don’t have to suffer more insults by having to buy batteries, which is a consolation of sort. After 30mins all is ready, how difficult could it be, pretty sure all my faculties are pretty much intact. Walking into the main office area with head held high, placed the toy on a desk, gathered everyone and turn it on, now I know it’s called “arm”, the bloody thing even blinked at me!
Let me show them this young punks … raising the throttle the propellers started to spin and it raised into a hover, applauses from everyone, see….old fart here still has it. That’s just a warm up I declared….let me show them, arm, props spinning and take off … holy shit!! … took off it did! … clearing all 7 metres of the office height in the blink of an eye, taking on a life of its own, it explored the office. The screams and shouts during this autonomous flight wasn’t cheers but panic with me in near shock when it almost shaved off the remaining little turf of crowning glory on my head. I swear I didn’t do anything … eventually the damn toy crash or sort of landed on a desk, the landing part was of course by me.
I had to admit it was not as easy as it looks, obviously I didn’t admit it at that time, it had to be some fault with the damn toy. That “toy” sparked the beginning a hobby that had been engaging and fulfilling for me. Thank you to the person who bought me that “toy”, you are forgiven for compromising my pride at that moment. Such a “toy” is a great way to get started on the fascinating hobby of drone racing, by the way it is called a quadcopter, a racing quadcopter.
Till next time, keep spinning.
